An Esthetician by Websters definition is “a person licensed to provide cosmetic skin care treatments and services (such as facials, hair removal, and makeup application)” . The word Esthetician is more commonly spelled Aesthetician, is usually a mysterious word to many people. Beauty culture has been around since the beginning of time but was only named around the early 1800’s.
Today one could find an Esthetician working in many locations and settings. One could easily find Esthetician's in Spas, Dermatology Centers, in conjunction with other kinds of Doctors in Med Spas, in Hair Salons, Workout Centers, Health Centers, Vacation Resorts, or even traveling to an off-site location as a mobile unit. In past years, an Esthetician or Aesthetician would be more commonly found assisting a burn surgeon in continuous care for burn patients, or providing upscale skincare to movie stars. Even further back in years records indicate that Cleopatra bathed in Soured milks to exfoliate her skin, and Greeks used olive oils to protect their skin from the sun damage.
The word Esthetics, or Aesthetics-more commonly used in Europe-was a word that also used to refers to a form of artful beauty. Beauty is mystifying and personal. It is desired for many reasons, and preexist, only to be enhanced on an individual basis.
Dictionary.com defines Esthetics as,
“1.relating to the philosophy of aesthetics; concerned with notions such as the beautiful and the ugly.2. relating to the science of aesthetics; concerned with the study of the mind and emotions in relation to the sense of beauty.3. having a sense of the beautiful; characterized by a love of beauty.4. relating to, involving, or concerned with pure emotion and sensation as opposed to pure intellectuality. Noun,5. the philosophical theory or set of principles governing the idea of beauty at a given time and place:the clean lines, bare surfaces, …the Cubist aesthetic.6. a particular individual’s set of ideas about style and taste, along with its expression:the designer’s aesthetic of accessible, wearable fashion; ….7. One’s set of principles or worldview as expressed through outward appearance, behavior, or actions: 8. Archaic. the study of the nature of sensation.”
So as we see by definition, Aesthetics is a desired, representation of our personal beauty choices. How we want to display our beliefs and standards. Taking care of your appearance is the beginning efforts, and the end results of skincare. It is an indulgence in art, culture, style and taste.
The word Esthetics came into use from the Greek culture and flowed through Europe and into the Americas starting in 1798 . Esthetics causes us to desire to beautify, through cleansing, removing unwanted hair and enhancing our natural beauty with desirable emollients, treatments, lashes and cosmetics on an individual and very personal scale.
